The Maasai Shuka: A Symbol of Power and Protection
At The Vale London, our designs are often deeply rooted in the stories and cultural traditions that inspire them. For Kylian Check, we looked to the vivid, bold heritage of the Maasai people of East Africa, particularly their iconic red shuka cloth, which plays a vital role in their most important ceremonies. This traditional cloth, worn by Maasai warriors, is more than just a garment—it is a symbol of strength, bravery, and cultural identity. Kylian is an homage to the timeless beauty of the Maasai shuka, reimagining its bold geometric design for modern interiors.
Traditionally, Maasai warriors (known as Morani) wear the red shuka during ceremonies such as the Adumu, or the jumping dance. This ceremony is a display of physical strength and endurance, as young men leap high into the air, competing to see who can jump the highest. The ability to jump high is seen as a symbol of readiness for adulthood, reflecting the strength and courage required to protect the community.
The bright red shuka worn during this ceremony is not only a marker of status and bravery but is also believed to ward off dangers, particularly from wild animals. The rich red color, combined with geometric patterns of checks or stripes, creates a visually striking image that has become synonymous with the Maasai people and their vibrant culture.
Last year, Melinda Marquardt, the Creative Director of The Vale London, traveled to Kenya, where she witnessed the Adumu firsthand. Immersed in the powerful rhythm of the jumping ceremony and captivated by the Maasai warriors dressed in their traditional red shukas, Melinda felt a deep connection to the energy and artistry of the moment. The experience sparked the inspiration for Kylian Check, as she sought to translate the boldness and cultural richness of the Maasai textile into a contemporary design, paying homage to the history and meaning behind the shuka while making it accessible for modern interiors.
While the traditional Maasai cloth is typically red, Kylian Check introduces a modern interpretation in six sophisticated colours. Obsidian, Parchment, Blueberry, Pine, Mushroom & Terracotta. These intense colours convey the strength and power of the original red shuka, while adapting the pattern to suit contemporary interior spaces.
The rhythmic grid of Kylian Check echoes the strong, structured patterns of the Maasai shuka, bringing a sense of balance and order to the design. Just as the shuka cloth flows with the movement of Maasai warriors during the jumping ceremony, Kylian Check carries a dynamic energy, yet its refined colour palette ensures it remains versatile for a range of interior styles.
We believe that good design should tell a story. Kylian Check connects us to the rich traditions of the Maasai people and their history of strength, courage, and cultural pride. Kylian Check brings the essence of Maasai heritage into the world of modern interior design, offering a pattern that is at once rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary.
